Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS BUHURT?
The term Buhurt is commonly used to describe the sport as a whole. Buhurt is a full contact combat sport that will have you fighting in real armor with real blunted weapons. Keep reading to LEARN about the categories of competition.
What's up with all these leagues and orgs?
You might hear about a few different leagues or orgs, but they play mostly the same with only a few differences. Think WWE vs WCW, UFC vs Bellator, Dagorhir vs Belegarth. Additionally AMMA is its own standalone promotion, booking their own fights for sport and entertainment.
Isnt buhurt super expensive?
A common worry is the cost of entry. Armor is not cheap, but the good and bad part is most armor orders take 6-8 months to produce, giving you some time to start on a payment plan that most armor makers offer. Luckily a lot of the training is done out of armor. Most teams do soft kit training using padded boffer weapons, padded helmets, and padded body protection.
What are the categories of competition in Buhurt?
Melees are a 5v5 team fight. If knocked to the ground, you are out. You can take your opponent down by either grappling or striking them until they choose to go to the ground. When one team has no fighters left standing the other team wins the round. It’s usually two out of three rounds.
Duels are 1v1 categories. The most common dueling categories are sword and shield, longsword, and sword and buckler. The fights are scored by Marshals who count landed blows over timed rounds. Grappling, kicks, punches, are prohibited in this category.
Outrance/Profights are another 1v1 category. These fights allow kicks, punches, and grappling. They are judged similar to MMA, based on strikes, takedowns, and control. These bouts have weight classes.
What is a Buhurt practice like?
Most teams train mostly in softkit and only a couple times a month in steel kit, but that varies by club preference. Practices are made up of grappling and sword skill drills as well as live rounds with training partners for both. Be prepared to break a sweat!
Do I need anything to get started?
Most teams have all the soft kit gear needed to host a sizable practice. Some clubs might even have loaner armor for you to try on to get a feel for the real thing. Just show up with gym clothes and some water! Groin protection is also highly recommended if you want to do live sparring rounds.
This sounds cool but I’m not sure I want to fight. Can I still get involved?
Absolutely! Teams depend on Support and Marshal positions to keep the fighters safe and the fight going!
